Illusions and sleight of hand also come to mind in the photographs and videos from the Handheld Case Studies series. In these works, blue, white, and orange spheres – a nod to John Baldessari – are held up in various arrangements framing the artist’s interest in the performance of motion, whether through photographs perceived as frame-by-frame, or through videos in which stillness is used to highlight the subtleties of motion. Ultimately, the photographs in this exhibition brings together performance, portraiture, optical illusion, and still life, hiding and revealing elements of each through plays on sight/vision and visibility.
